Hyderabad, June 18th, 2026: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Aster Prime Hospital, successfully removed a rare 500-gram abdominal tumor from a six-month-old baby girl weighing just six kilograms. One month after the surgery, the infant is thriving, gaining weight appropriately, feeding well, and enjoying a healthy recovery.
The baby was brought to the hospital after her parents noticed a prominent abdominal swelling and were concerned about her failure to gain weight as expected for her age. During the initial clinical examination, doctors identified a large abdominal mass and immediately advised imaging studies.
An ultrasound revealed a tumor. Considering the size of the lesion and the risk of compression of nearby organs, a multidisciplinary team decided to proceed with prompt surgical intervention.
The complex surgery lasted nearly four hours, during which the team successfully removed the 500-gram tumor intact while carefully preserving surrounding vital structures.
Following the procedure, the infant was closely monitored in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). She was gradually weaned off ventilatory support, maintained stable vital signs, and resumed feeding without significant delay. Her postoperative recovery was smooth, with no major complications, and she was discharged on the fifth postoperative day.
Histopathological examination later confirmed the tumor to be a benign mature cystic teratoma.
